We all know Welcome Week is the week for freshmen to get to know their roommates, floormmates, and experience the tons of stuff IU has to offer during the week before classes start. However, you must understand the basis of Welcome Week: it's basically a free week at your new school. What does that mean? That means it's time to take advantage of it!

Some things I did during Welcome Week to help me get ahead before school actually started:
  1. If you didn't get all of your books, go get them! Go to TIS, the IMU Bookstore, or just buy them online using the two-day shipping.
  2. Walk the campus! Get to know where you'll be spending the next four years. Find a favorite spot to eat lunch, jog, or just sit and look at the beautiful campus.
  3. Find your favorite dining hall. Lunch and dinner can be a hectic time in the residence halls, so know which one will be best for your once your belly starts rumbling.
  4. Walk your schedule. Find out where all your classes are before they start. No one wants to be that freshman who can't find their way around on the first day.
  5. Skim your syllabus so you already know what the professor is going to talk about.
  6. Double check to make sure your professor didn't post any first-day assignments.

When you first get to college, academics might be the last thing on your mind, especially because Welcome Week is so much fun, but if you spend 30 minutes each day of Welcome Week doing one of these things, you'll be way ahead of the pack.

There is still going to be plenty of time for fun, but you must know, once the Welcome Week entertainment wears off, the real work begins.
Make the most of the free time you have before it starts.

Good luck, Hoosiers!

Welcome, Class of 2017!
