The Beginning of my Hoosier Experience

I grew up in Mishawaka, Indiana. It's a small city in Northern Indiana with not much to do other than go to the mall or walk around near the St. Joseph river. It gets a real old, real fast. I loved the place so much that my Junior year of high school I decided to graduate a year early and skip my Senior year just to get away from it as quickly as possible. I mean, Mishawaka wasn't THAT bad. Though, the incessant stench of the local dog food factory and waste water treatment plant did get pretty old after awhile, and the twenty five shoddy bars within a two mile radius of my house sketched me out a bit. Overall, it was a decent place, but after living there for the first seventeen years of my life I was restless and ready to get away.

I needed to leave and get a start on my life. With two brothers at IU already, such a beautiful campus, and a multitude of fantastic academic programs , how could I resist the wonderful Indiana University campus that I am now proud to call my home? Well, clearly I couldn't, so I moved into the dorms with a random roommate. I had no clue what to expect, but the ideal situation at that point was that I would be best friends with my roommate. It ended up being the complete opposite.

My random roommate ended up being a very nice person. However, she didn't appreciate me coming in at what she thought to be ungodly hours of the night and I didn't appreciate her turning the lights out at 8 pm every single night. The biggest problem was that we just had very different lifestyles, and no matter how hard we tried it was difficult for either of us to accommodate to the others wishes. Because of this, we would get into small arguments, but were both passive aggressive people with no intention of screaming at each other, so she kindly solved the problem by swiftly moving out. A new random roommate replaced her, and she quickly became one of my best friends. My new roomie and I now have girly nights filled with laughing, doing face masks, painting our nails, and (of course) watching romcoms, whereas before I barely spoke to my roommate. This just goes to show that random roommates can either be a disaster or a blessing. That's basically the beginning of my Hoosier experience.
