Do you like to ride horses? Or have you always wanted to learn how to ride? The Indiana University Equestrian Team (IUET) could be a great opportunity for you! We have members who have rode and competed for years and some who are just learning the basics. I am on the English team but there is also a Western team at IU!

I have rode since I was in 7th grade and I was thrilled to learn that IU had a club team for riding! I get to ride as often as I do back at home and meet girls that share this interest with me.

We practice once a week, either on Wednesday or Thursday nights, at Big Star Stables. Big Star is about 25 minutes south of campus, and the team organizes a lesson carpool so you can go even if you do not have a car. When you get there you help do various barn chores, like cleaning stalls, sweeping aisles, and tacking up horses for the lessons. Every rider goes through an evaluation at the beginning of the year to find out their level of experience. The team then creates lesson groups, putting members with similar skill levels in the same group.

One great part about the team is that it is up to you whether or not you want to compete. You can simply take weekly group lessons, or if you like a more competitive experience you can participate in the various horse shows throughout the year. There are about three or four IHSA shows per semester, all located within Indiana.

We also have socials and events that really bring the team together. We have potluck dinners at each others house or apartments, gift exchanges during the holidays, and team outings like our annual trip to Rolex.

Our coach, Stephanie Laski, teaches lessons and attends all the shows.

Freshman Audrey Leonard smiles for the camera at horse show at
Saint Mary of the Woods College in Terre Haute.

“My favorite part about IUET is that everyone is learning," she said. "The riders, horses, and myself learn new things every practice. Sometimes, what we learn concerns horses, and other times we might learn something about ourselves. I feel that a rider is never done learning.”
