It's so good to have yet another semester under my belt. This semester, I was the Indiana Daily Student's Greek Life beat reporter and the IU Public Relations Student Society of America's Co-Director of Programming.
As a beat reporter, I got to cover an abundance of stories including:
- new IFC scholarships,
- a new fraternity,
- the Air National guard,
- a student's emotional support dog,
- a sorority with only one member
- the ambassador of Afghanistan,
- a freeze mob,
- new genetic discoveries of plants,
- IFC hazing prevention,
- protecting rhinos in Africa,
- the largest Greek philanthropy in the country,
- NY Times science correspondent, Donald McNeil,
- and many other things.
A story I wrote about previous fraternity members raising $50,000+ for the Lymphoma Research Foundation in honor of their fraternity brother even got picked up by The Today Show.
As Co-Director of Programming, I got to organize and experience resume and portfolio workshops, a young professionals panel, and a speed networking event.
Next semester, I am the General Assignments Editor for the IDS, I am still the Co-Director of Programming for IU PRSSA, and I begin as a PR intern for Astonish Media Group, LLC. I love journalism, media, and communications and I am so lucky to be able to experience it on some level every day.
Helpful things I've learned over the semester (or I feel like reiterating):
- Study earlier so you don't have to panic
- It never hurts to write everything out on a to-do list
- Netflix will be there when you are done with all your work
- Getting up at 9am vs. 10am on a weekend makes a huge difference
- Find a stress reliever that works for you and do it. Often.
At IU, you get to try so many new, amazing things that you would never even dream of. This semester has been the best one to date and I am very excited to see what the spring semester brings.
