Hoosier Tap Company at Indiana University

Hey there everybody!

Hope everyone's semester is going well! I'm back to brag one more time about an activity I'm involved in, and a relatively new one at that!

I danced competitively growing up, from the time I was three until around middle school. I got involved in show choir in high school and had pretty much stopped taking actual dance classes all together due to the million different things that took up my time. Coming to college, I knew I wanted to keep performing, but I didn't know if there were very many opportunities at such a large school for a dancer like myself to start up where I left off.

The dance classes at IU are so much fun, and I had taken intermediate and advanced tap early on here at IU. I knew that it was my greatest strength and that I had to keep that passion alive if there was any way I could.

To my great surprise, Laura Miller and Hannah Morton started Hoosier Tap Company at Indiana University at the beginning of last semester. The group was going to focus around advanced tappers who were looking to continue to perform and grow as tap dancers. There was a fantastic turn out at auditions and I was really hoping I could wiggle my way into a group with such talented dancers, and amazingly I did. The company is composed of 10 dancers, including dance majors, a musical theater major, a math major and even two speech pathology majors! It's great to see how all of our backgrounds combine to make one pretty unique group of students.

The two directors of the company both feel the same way about tap dancing as I do. Tap is alive and well in the dance world and we want to showcase everything it's about. Exposing tap to people that would have otherwise never seen it is a main priority, and it's a blast!

We have had some amazing performance opportunities this past semester, including opening for the acapella group Ladies First and performing at IUDM. We are planning a showcase for the spring entitled "Tap into Art" which will feature various student dancers, vocalists, and musicians of IU as well as what we have been working on this year.

This has finalized once and for all for me that IU is really where I'm supposed to be, tapping alongside these wonderful dancers has been such a wild ride and I can't wait to see what is to come for this company!

I hope you continue to find where you fit in at IU, just like I have. Never be afraid to put yourself out there, even as an upperclassmen, you might just find exactly what you're looking for.
