To my surprise, I have come to realize that there is so much free time in college. The media often pins college as a time of all-nighters with coffee addicts always rushing around to get things done. Yes, this can be true, but that is only if you don't use your time wisely. Depending on the class schedule and course load, one may be busier than another, however there is still a lot of free time for everyone. I can guarantee it.
The easiest way to make good use of your time is to not leave huge gaps between classes, if at all possible. If there are large gaps, you will be more than likely to go back to your dorm and take an unintended three hour nap or go on Netflix binges. You may say you're not the person to do that, but trust me, in college, it's inevitable. Instead, put classes back to back, or implement short breaks between them to give you time to grab lunch or go to the library to do a quick study sesh before taking the quiz in the next class. However, if those gaps between classes are unavoidable, DON'T GO BACK TO YOUR DORM! Utilize this time to study, work on homework assignments, and even get ahead in classes. This can be really beneficial if you're the type that enjoys going out on weekends and not using them to catch up on everything you avoided throughout the week.
Another great thing to do in your spare time is to work out! There are so many options on campus for this. Try out the many options at the SRSC or at the WIC. Studies have also shown that working out is an excellent de-stressor. In addition, there are so many different kinds of classes that are offered for around campus at these sports facilities and in dorm buildings, such as yoga, zumba, Insanity, and many more. Not to mention a great way to meet new people!
IU has a huge campus, and I'm sure you understand by now that you spend so much time walking. Rather than walking and thinking about what happened last weekend or completely zoning out, utilize this time and review course material in your head of the class you were just in, or quiz yourself for upcoming exams. Another great way to utilize this time is to listen to audiobooks or podcasts. Learn something new or listen to the book of the upcoming movie you want to see! Navigate IU's recreational sports page to find something you enjoy.
Join clubs, rec sports, or find a place to gain consistent volunteer hours. All of these are great ways to have fun, de-stress, and meet new people. Not to mention great things to add to those oh-so-important resumes and applications! Click here to find out ways to get involved on campus and around Bloomington.
Lastly, if you find yourself with so much extra time you don't know what to do with, this is probably a good cue that you can handle a part time job! Obviously jobs look great on applications of any kind, they give you real world experience, and it's definitely nice to have extra spending money (or money to save!).
