Hey all!
So. I started writing this blog freshman year when I came to IU. I am now near the closing end of my junior year. Which is actually crazy. I could have never imagined how these years at IU were going to go. I have written a lot of advice to the freshmen, and I am surely not done yet. I have been reminiscing on why I chose IU in what seems like forever ago. And now, I am going to give you the top ten reasons why YOU, future freshmen, should choose IU too. Maybe I can give you a little insight on the best decision I ever made.
1. IU has entertainment for anyone and everyone.Whether it's Hoosier basketball or Broadway musicals, IU's got it. Such a large campus offers not only Big Ten sporting events, but some of the best shows you could find anywhere at the IU Auditorium. I have been shocked at how many different things there are to see and do on campus. And that's just campus. Don't even get me started on the rest of Bloomington.
2. IU is extremely eclectic and diverse.I know, every big university likes to brag about the diversity in their student population and how that can change your college experience. But really, we have it. I have met people from more countries than I can probably even name and more cultural backgrounds than I ever thought possible in my lifetime, and they are all at one place. You'll be shocked at how much you can learn from someone who is different than you.
3. IU offers courses you will love... even outside your major. The two best courses I have ever taken at IU were the ones that I took at random... Music, War, and Peace and The American Musical. I had no idea what they would be like and they ended up being the most interesting classes I have taken here. Music, War, and Peace has even lead me to add a folklore/ethnomusicology minor to my senior year (who knew, right?).
4. IU offers SO many different areas of study.Like I said above, the amount of different classes you can take is incredible, and that leads to a lot of different types of degrees that are offered. There are so many different majors and minors to choose from. There is even a program where you can create your own major. Pretty cool, right?
5. IU has tons of clubs and student run organizations.I am in two student run organizations myself, Hoosierettes and Hoosier Tap Company. They have given me performance opportunities that I might not have been able to find anywhere else. Whether you also want to perform or just want do an intramural sport, the offerings at IU are more than I have seen anywhere else.
6. IU has a large and thriving Greek community.Being in a sorority that is truly my home, I could talk about this one for days. There are many different types of Greek organizations to join on campus among the different councils. Going Greek changed my entire college experience, and with the strong Greek system like IU has, it could change yours too.
7. IU has the most beautiful campus. If you're considering IU, you must take a tour of campus. This is what sealed the deal for me when choosing IU. I get to see so much beauty on campus everyday and it really has the traditional college feel like I have always wanted.
8. IU is in Bloomington, the perfect college town.Everything about Bloomington screams college town. From the restaurants to the small town community feel, it makes college feel like home. Part of the reason why I am staying here this summer is just so I can explore Bloomington even more. That's how much I love it.
9. IU is a community that wants to help you succeed.I have had the greatest experience here with both my advisors and my professors. Everyone here truly wants you to do well and will help you make the most of your academic experience. There are so many people to reach out to and I have always found that I receive a great deal of help that has highly benefited my college experience and my future career.
10. IU makes you a Hoosier. There is no doubt in my mind that I belong on this campus. IU was the right place for me. I fit perfectly into the mold that is IU and it can do that for you to. When you make the choice to come to IU, you are a Hoosier. And in my opinion, that's the best thing you can be.
Crazy how fast these years are going by. But I am so glad that I continue to have the opportunity to share it with all of you. GO HOOSIERS.
