How to Master New Student Orientation In Three Steps!

So, here we are once again. All of the big and bad high school seniors are set back to square one: being a Freshman once again. Before you get on campus for Welcome Week or IFS, you will need to go to New Student Orientation (NSO), where you register for classes and get your student ID, making it official. You're gonna be a Hoosier in the fall.

I'm gonna give you some tips on how you can conquer NSO, and have fun in the process!

I don't care who you are, this is a must. Talk to other people! They don't bite! Odds are they are just as nervous as you are. They want to talk to people as much as you want to talk to people. Nobody wants to be isolated while in your student groups. Just ask simple questions like "What's your major?" or "Where are you from?" or "What kind of music do you like?" or anything! You don't want to be that person who doesn't talk to anyone. You won't have as much fun if you don't interact with others. Odds are you won't see them or recognize them unless you live in the same dorm or sit by them in class, so what does it matter?

Don't be that person that walk around orientation that's not happy that their there. Quit being such a Debby Downer!

If you're upset about being at orientation, your head is in the wrong place. It's a great time and signifies that you are now an Indiana Hoosier. Also, don't be mad about your housing assignment. Don't start off your freshman year with a negative outlook on where you are probably going to spend at least a semester. You don't know what the future has in store for you, so keep a positive attitude about what residence hall you were assigned

During NSO, you've got to meet up with your advisor and choose the classes that you will be taking in the Fall. Have your Academic Planning Worksheet filled out and handy. It will be useful as you will know what courses you wanna take, so it makes your advising meeting shorter. Also, what I did was visit ratemyprofessor.com and courserank.com to see what the students had to say about the professor. Their reviews are helpful, so definitely check those out. On the other hand, don't let a poor professor ranking stop you from taking a course that you're geniunely interested in! Also, the world isn't over if you have Friday classes or morning classes. I have 3 Friday classes, one of them being a Monday-Wednesday-Friday 8:00-8:50 AM class. Sure, it sucks. But it's not the end of the world. On the bright side, all of my classes are done by 3:45 PM. I plan to take a nap after my class, and go out after that nap. That way I have energy to do whatever college kids do during the night time.

So, to master NSO, you must be social, stay positive, and do your research on courses! Soak in the campus in its entirety because you are now an Indiana Hoosier. This beautiful place will be your home in the Fall.
