So, I am about to be a senior here at IU. Awhile back, I wrote a blog that was my favorite one yet... Well, I have another one to write in even further hindsight to all of the new freshmen coming in. Some wisdom from a little further down the line. Here's not just 10 things you all should know, but the 10 things you all should remember as you push through your first year here...
1. Never doubt yourself.Your first year of college may be daunting right now... but you can do it. You were accepted to IU because they knew you have what it takes to succeed. You were chosen to be a Hoosier. Never doubt for a second that this is where you're supposed to be, or that you can't do it. You can.
2. Smell the Roses... literally.Take time to notice how absolutely beautiful this campus is. It'll make your time so much richer if you get out of your dorm room and take a walk. Especially in the fall, Bloomington is beautiful. Make the most of your time, even outside of where you live and outside the classroom.
3. You are smarter than you think.See point 1. Find the things you excel at in your academics and really excel at them... but when you find something challenging, don't quit. Just because you don't think you are any good at math doesn't mean you can't be good at it here. Try your hardest. You have the brains that got you here.
4. Dorm life is only one part of your college life.Love the dorm or hate the dorm, it's only one year. Meet the people on your floor, make friends that you can keep all four years, but know there will be more past this point.
5. It's ok to be both nervous and excited. When I left for college, I was both happy and sad. That is okay. You're allowed to be weary of leaving home and both excited to start your new life at IU. Those feelings are normal. Feel them both.
6. Work hard, play hard.Your first year of academics is going to be different and it will be a big adjustment learning how to study in a different environment. But don't let that be all you do. Work as hard as you can, but don't forget to take the time to have fun too. You're here for an education first and foremost, but you're also here for the life experience.
7. Everyone takes time to adjust.Growing pains are inevitable. The first semester is going to be a time to settle in. It's only one phase and you'll be surprised how comfortable you are second semester. It will truly be your new home, just give it time.
8. Embrace becoming a Hoosier.Go to the events offered to only freshmen during Welcome Week. At first glance you might think it seems so dorky, (I'll admit it, that was me), but this is the only opportunity you get to do those things. And their admittedly awesome.
9. You only do freshman year once.Make memories. Make friends. Enjoy the transition. You don't get a do over, make the most of every second!
10. You journey is only beginning. This is only year one. If your first year is this awesome... imagine how much fun you're going to have for the next three years. Coming from someone who is about to take the leap into senior year... You're about to have the time of your life.
As cliche as it might sound... it's the start of the rest of your life. Get excited, brand new Hoosiers. Your time is coming!
