How my roommate caused me to fall in-love with Collins LLC

When I was senior in high school, I diligently weighed the pros and cons of living in a single dorm or cohabiting with someone I had never met before. I consider myself more of a reserved person and eventually decided that maybe having a random roommate would help me to get rid of some of my bashfulness. I could not have been more wrong.

Before moving in, my roommate and I had chatted and seemed to have a lot in common. She too was shy like me and I knew that this would be a challenge for us. But what I didn't expect was going an entire school year without having a single conversation. That's right. For two whole semesters I lived with a senior and we never had a conversation. I awkwardly tried to engage chatter a few times but it failed miserably and I eventually gave up.

As if the lack of engagement wasn't enough to drive me insane, I started to tune in to all sorts of annoying things that she did and that silence only intensified my annoyance. A mountain of grubby clothes, dirty underwear left on the floor, tissues piled on her bed, the heat up to nearly 80 degrees - these are just a few of the things that really started to push my buttons.

But even though my roommate and I didn't quite mesh, I fell in love with a building I may not have otherwise even known existed. Collins Living-Learning Center gave me a chance to get away from the normal style of dorms. I spent plenty of nights down in the cafe (the Cheshire), enjoying cheap but delicious coffee and a comfortable atmosphere. Having a not-so-sociable roommate forced me to get out and explore the building I was living in and the campus I decided to spend the next four years.

If it weren't for the LLC, I don't know how I would have survived the year with my roommate. When I was applying for housing, I knew that an LLC is exactly where I wanted to be. Collins has a larger sense of community than other dorms may have. Every new Collinsite is required to take a student-taught class that teaches about the history of the center. Unlike typical classes, boring lectures and taking notes weren't apart of the class I experienced. We learned about places to get ice cream on campus and how to host an array of events. Learning to host events is a big portion of the class because Collins thrives off of student-ran events, such as movie nights on the lawn. Collins is like a friendly neighborhood, not just a dorm.

But once finals week rolled around I was eager to pack my bags. I won't miss my roommate, but I'll be missing Collins (and views like this) until next semester.

On the steps of CLLC.
