What's up Hoosiers? We're officially past the halfway point of the semester and everyone's starting to get super busy with tests, papers and group projects. It's a lot to handle for anyone, but it's especially difficult if you're a freshman going through everything for the first time. I know that personally I could have handled the stress and uncertainty better, so I've compiled a list of the four biggest lessons I should havve followed my freshman year. Here goes nothing.
1) Be OutgoingCliche as it might be, the most important takeaway from my freshman year was to be as friendly as possible. People say college is the best four years of your life, and they're not talking about the homework. Yes, of course you should study and get good grades, but take time to get to know all the different people around you. Everyone has a story and who knows? You may meet your future bridesmaids or best friends. Channel your inner Queen B and get out there!
I can't stress enough how lucky we are to have so many resources on campus, many of which are included in your tuition! Impending winter weather bumming you out? Check out CAPS, where you can talk to someone who will help you work through what you're feeling. Get your food fix at one of the food courts on campus. It's easy to eat at the same place all the time, but there's so much more to try if you're willing to walk a little farther. Then, if you want to burn off all that food, and you're looking for a workout other than the Ballantine stairs, hit up the SRSC or the WIC. Just don't be this guy.
Professors can seem distant, but after going to their office hours, I've realized that most professors want you to succeed, but are waiting on you to make the first move. Professors and advisors are untapped resources for many students (like freshman me) and want to help you out. Do yourself a favor and go talk to them! Many say that they're bored during office hours anyway.
