The Fame of IU's Little 500

Indiana's Tradition of the Little 500 Founded in 1951 and still going strong

Indiana is legendary for this famous event that people wrap up as a "bike race." The Little 500 (Little 5) is a great celebration for the whole campus beyond just the racers and Greek houses. Besides partying and constantly celebrating, this event unites the entire campus and makes this week our week. The reason I am writing this post today is not to increase the traffic for posts and stories about Little 500 but to write responses to some fans via social media and talk about the origin of the race. This celebratory week leading up to the race is not understandable unless you are a true citizen of IU nation and really embrace the excitement and culture. Many other universities try to mock our tradition because of our notoriety and fame. For example, Purdue has a "Little 5," University of Wisconsin has a "Block Party," and Mizzou has "Greek Week" to name a few. This is a little irritating, but imitation is a form of flattery--a nice little cliché to explain my feelings.

Of course, we have a complex for partying hard, but unfortunately, raising the bar for alcohol consumption-caused arrests seems to be in a direction that we should not be proud. Bloomington courthouse is the only one open on Sundays in order to deal with the high frequency of Saturday night arrests. Little Five is a popular weekend at the courthouse.

This Lance Armstrong quote is extremely credible and insightful to the scope of the race and its national recognition. Hoosier nation and its fame!

Enjoy!

XOXO,

Chelsie Kasun
